Thermal-transfer printing is a special type of digital printing. Between the card which should be printed and the thermal print head a special color foil (thermal transfer film or thermal transfer ribbon) is place. It works similar to a carbon ribbon of a typewriter. The film has a colored wax / resin layer on the underside and is available in different quality levels.
The thermal print head has hundreds of heating elements (dots) that are turned on and off by computer control. The actual print is here, as with other electronic methods, “print-less”. The transfer of the ink is done by switching on a heating element. The color melts on the transfer foil and is then transferred to the card. Foil and card move synchronously through the printhead. Halftones can only be represented by screening, because the color always gets off the foil completely.
The first portable card printer was invented by Frank Dorner in Vienna and was presented in 1985 at CeBIT in Germany. The PDC 1800 revolutionized the world of plastic cards by enabling the customization of loyalty cards, membership cards, ski passes and more, easily, flexibly and affordably on site. Since then, the technology in card printers was constantly developed and improved. Nowadays Variuscard is your distributor for Evolis mobile card printers, blank cards and accessories.
With the technique of flat embossing, personal data, customer number and other data, are printed on the card in thermal-transfer. This type of personalization can be done in monochrome (mostly black) or four-colored (sublimation print for photos). The personalized cards are used as loyalty cards, ID cards or as security cards in combination with security features such as holograms or others. Thermal-transfer and thermal-sublimation printing are done on the finished stamped card with a card printer.
In contrast to the more complex sub-laminate personalization, the flat embossing allows greater flexibility of the customer. On provided blank cards, the personalization is done with your own card printer directly on the spot. Customers can flexibly issue individual cards without having to wait for production from the supplier.
