Which NFC functions are new on Apple iOS 13?

At the kick-off event for this year’s Apple WWDC on June 3rd, 2019, Apple announced the further opening of NFC features. With the new iOS 13 it’s now possible to transfer data contactless – without an additional APP. Now it’s finally possible to read and encode Chip Cards or NFC Tags as with Android or other operating systems. The widespread distribution of connected things and the Internet of Things is no longer an obstacle.

Which NFC functions are possible with iOS 13?

Apple’s iOS 13 now can execute all common NFC functionalities and can therefore be used for sending and receiving information from NFC chips. This allows e.g. to transfer music titles contactless and without an app, but also to read NFC loyalty cards, or to credit points. Authentications can be carried out securely and product information can be transmitted contactless. And all this without having additional APPS to install.

Why do I need NFC for the Internet of Things?

All NFC-enabled smartphones can read information contactless by simply tapping at a chip or a tag. With the last opening of the NFC functions by Apple, nothing holds back the widespread of the Internet of Things.

Which new NFC features are available with Apple iOS 13?

Support for writing NDEF messages.
NFC tags encoded with an NDEF message can be permanently locked using the writeLock() function.
Direct access to the output of NFC commands for the protocols FeliCa, ISO 15693 (SLI-X), ISO 7816 (Type 2, NTAG,…) and MIFARE (Ultralight, Plus, DESFire,…). This includes all currently used NFC protocols for NFC tags.
This allows direct access to the commands on the NFC chip for advanced functions.
Access to the UID of the NFC chip is now possible.
