MIFARE Plus S and MIFARE Plus X are memory chips used to migrate MIFARE Classic systems to a higher level of security. They are used as MIFARE Classic during the migration phase and after the upgrade they have security level switch AES-128-based authentication and signing of the transferred data.
With MIFARE Plus X, complete AES data encryption also takes place during data transmission. Both chips are certified according to Common Criteria EAL 4+ and comply with the ISO standard 14443 A. The chips are received with 4- or 7-digit UID number and are equipped with a rewritable EEPROM data memory of 2048 bytes or 4096 bytes. They are fully backwards compatible with the MIFARE Classic 1K, 4K. (MIFARE, MIFARE Classic and MIFARE Plus are trademarks of NXP B.V)
AES means a public encryption algorithm “Advanced Encryption Standard”. This is used by governments for high security documents. AES is the successor standard of DES. AES impresses with its flexibility, performance and safety. The block ciphers are composed of a sequence of byte replacements, scrambling, and linear transforms performed on 16-byte data blocks. The designations AES-128, AES-192 and AES-256 stand for the bit length of the key. For comparison, a DES key length is 56 bits. To date, there is no practical attack known for AES. AES is therefore the preferred encryption standard for banks, high-security systems and governments.
