NDEF
NFC Data Exchange Format
The NDEF is a standardized format which allows data exchange between NFC smart cards or NFC tags and smartphones. Learn here what can be stored in NDEF messages and what you can do with NDEF encoded NFC smart cards.
NDEF is a standardized data format which allows a smartphone to read or write on an NFC card or an NFC tag. The NDEF format is used to store data such as URLs, text files or digital business cards. NFC-enabled chips like the MiFare® NTAG® or DesFire® can be configured with NDEF. One or more so-called NDEF records can be stored on it and each one can have it’s own task.
Various NDEF records can be stored on an NFC card or tag. The amount of data that can be stored depends on the memory size of the chip and is between 48 bytes and 8 Kbytes. Here are some examples of what can be done with an NDEF message and an NFC card.
The most common used feature of NFC cards and stickers is to open up URLs. By reading the chip, a web address is automatically called up, without the user having to open the browser himself. For this purpose, any URL or web address can be stored in the chip.
Applications:
Forget the tedious typing of business cards. With NFC business cards, contacts can be easily stored on the smartphone. All data: name, company, telephone numbers and are stored as a digital business card on the NFC card. With smartphones, the card can be read and the contact will be saved automatically.
With this technique, it is possible that contact information on the NFC card is always up to date. Even if the card has been already produced and your data has changed later. The valuable NFC cards then don’t have to be disposed and have always your current contact information. Only internet connection must be guaranteed for the reading smartphone.
NDEF can also start search queries on Google Maps. The user can see the address on his smartphone directly on Google Maps by tapping his smartphone to the chip card or tag, without spending time for typing in an exact address – which can be very laborious.
You can also use NDEF to generate SMS templates, which will be opened up after tapping the smartphone. The customer only has to confrim and send the message. This can be useful, for example, in sweepstakes.
Even videos can be started by tapping on a smartphone. No complicated URL entry or long search on video portals. NFC product packaging can use the NDEF technology to provide more detailed information about the respective product. For example, in food packaging, videos about ingredients, production, or recipe ideas can be linked.
