IC chip cards with memory chips and crypto cards

The first generation of smart cards with contact IC chip. Used in memory cards and for cryptographic applications. Contact chip cards are still used for bank cards and other card types.

Contact IC chip cards and smart cards

In the case of a contact-type IC chip card, a cavity is milled into a conventional plastic card and then the corresponding chip is inserted with an adhesive. To do this, the plastic card must comply with ISO standard ISO-7816 and have a minimum thickness of 0.8mm or 800μ. Simple memory chips or cryptographic processor chips for secure applications can be used.

This technology has been patented and is in use since about 1975. It is still in use today, but finds little use in new systems. The contact-based technology is increasingly being replaced by the cheaper and contactless RFID smart card technology. For older chip types (memory chips) we still offer card blanks if available.

Applications

Access and time recording
Smart cards for access management and time recording. Smart cards with memory chips are the most common cards used here. Crypto chips are used when it comes to highly secure access control. Special encryption procedures guarantee maximum security.
Customer card
Chip cards as customer cards are used for example in fitness centers, pharmacies or tanning studios. With these cards clients can check their scores, get access to special facilities or can use vending machines.
Ticketing & public transport
Identification cards and tickets in form of annual passes for public transport. With photo personalization, tickets can also be used as ID cards at the same time. The contactless technology enables very short waiting times at the POV (point of validation) and thus contributes to user satisfaction.
