The Story of a innovative family-company
The company Variuscard is about a long traditional production on plastic-cards. The founder and inventor Frank Dorner started this production 1964 with the company KUNZ polymer-processing, so nowadays this company offer plastic card productions in Vienna. Because of this invention Frank Dorner was really sucessful with his company all over the world. With 50 years experience and more than hundred millions of producing cards we are looking proud back to a enventful history.
1964-1984 – The beginnings
Our place of production in the 22nd district of Vienna is still known as “KUNZ Kunststoffverarbeitung limited” by many of our regular customers, which was founded in 1964 or as “Digicard Plastikkarten Systeme limited”. In 1964 the first plastic card entered the Austrian market. It was designed and produced for the french car producer Peugeot. In 1976 Frank Dorner developed, together with the company “Skidata” the first thermos-labeled plastic card with magnetic stripe.
1984-2005 -Where Innovation has tradition
The founding stone for the presently card-production was invented by Frank Dorner. Since the beginning was the Digicard GmbH a world leader with a strong technology position. Even the first UV-Offset-Machine was operating in this comapany. The family-company from Frank and Michael Dorner had some advantages on the austrian card market so they set up new trends on this market.
2005-2012 – An overview about the restructuring
Because of the expansion of our corporate structur it was necessary to adjust the “Plantaplast Produktions- und Handels GmbH“, which was founded in 2005, to the important cards-business. Since October 2011 the company is named “Variuscard Produktions- und Handels GmbH”. In 2009 Michael Dorner, the head of Variuscard, took the initiative and launched the first digital offset-machine in Austria which is able to print on plastic and paper. With this new technology Variuscard enforced the sustainable production: digital offset-machines need 90% less energy and it treats the environment with care. Because of the importance of environment protection and using ressources, especially raw materials, efficiently, we are recycling the old cards of our customers. Old and crushed cards and punching scrap are recycled as well and form the fundament of our new products like cable channels.
2012-2020 – Prospect
Since 2012 Variuscard offers the management of complete direct-mailings, beginning with the order form and ending with the transport of the cards. With this approach into the sector of CRM and customer data management to company now offers fully-developed solutions. Furthermore Variuscard invests continuously into new technologies and into the optimizing process of the production-methods. So you can also use new technologies and production-methods under the lable Variuscard. In the proximate years an intensified expansion is planed, to offer international operating companies an competent contact on-site.
As a traditonal family business we still maintain an cherish our principles and ambitious up to this day : We provide the best possible products and solutions for all requirements all around the plastic card. We awe our costumers as well as our competitors daily with innovating ideas and concepts. Since the environment is one of our companies main concerns, all our cards from 2012 onwards are manufactured with at least 20% recycling material with no loss in quality.

The principle of Variuscard is simple. It is based on the values of an austrian family business in the second generation and it describes the way we are thinking and working.
